Enugu is Igbo-speaking, but the state contains the two main dialect groups of northern Igbo — Wawa and Nsukka — both historically marginalised in Standard Igbo.

- Igbo (Wawa dialect) — Udi, Awgu, Nkanu; tonally distinct.
- Igbo (Nsukka dialect) — Nsukka, Igbo-Eze; closer to Idoma in some lexicon.
- Igbo (Enugu urban / Standard) — administrative and university dialect.
Minor and endangered languages#
- Igala in border villages with Kogi.
- Idoma in Uzo-Uwani border communities.
Lingua francas#
Igbo universal; Hausa in markets and Coal-Camp; English in schools.
Notable literary and political moments#
- The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (1960 — Nigeria's first indigenous university) became the institutional home of Igbo Studies and the modern Igbo orthography ('Onwu', 1961).
