Overview#

Edo is an oil state, a gas state, a steel state, and a rubber state. Its oil acreage straddles the western Niger Delta–Anambra Basin frontier (OMLs 4, 38, 41 — the Seplat heartland); the Ogorode Sapele gas hub feeds the regional grid; the Ajaokuta Steel Complex is in Kogi but the iron-ore feedstock route via Itakpe-Ajaokuta-Warri runs through Edo; and the Iyanomo / Sapele rubber estates have been continuous since 1900.

Geology & Deposits#

Western Niger Delta oil & gas. OMLs 4, 38, 41 (Seplat / NPDC JV — acquired from Shell 2010 in the country's largest indigenous oil deal at the time). Key fields: Oben (gas hub), Sapele, Amukpe, Ovhor, Okporhuru. Plus OMLs 13, 30 in the same belt. Limestone (Okpella). Cretaceous limestone — Dangote Cement Okpella (3 mtpa), Bua Cement Okpella, several smaller plants. Marble (Igara, Igarra). Ornamental + dimension stone. Lignite (Ogwashi-Asaba formation extensions). Sub-economic. Rubber. Iyanomo, Sapele, Igueben — Michelin-era plantations now operated by Saroafrica / Okomu Oil (Okomu primarily Edo). Forest produce. Okomu Forest Reserve.

Operators & Output#

- Seplat Energy + NPDC JV — OMLs 4, 38, 41. Crude output ~50,000 bpd combined. - NPDC — OML 30 (with Heritage), OML 65. - Dangote Cement Okpella, Bua Cement Okpella, Edo Cement — limestone. - Okomu Oil Palm Plc, Presco Plc — oil-palm and rubber.

Gas: Oben/Sapele hub processes >1 bcf/d for the West African Gas Pipeline and the domestic grid.

Host-Community & Revenue#

Edo receives 13% derivation but at a smaller absolute scale than Akwa Ibom / Bayelsa / Delta / Rivers. The Esan and Etsako LGAs (Okpella, Auchi, Igarra) host most of the solid-mineral footprint; cement-quarry blasting and community-development tension is the principal local dispute.

Current Status#

Producing: every named field; both Okomu and Presco; all three Okpella cement plants. Strategic: the Sapele-Oben gas hub is the keystone of NLNG Train 7 backfill plans.
