★ Benin City cult-violence belt (1999–present) — Edo State, particularly Benin City and Ekpoma (the home of Ambrose Alli University), is the epicentre of university-bred cult fraternities (Black Axe, Eiye, Buccaneers, Vikings) that originated in southern campuses and matured in Edo's polytechnic and university system from the early 1990s. Cumulative annual cult-related deaths in Edo: 80–200/year through the 2000s and 2010s; many gangs export to Italy/Spain through the trafficking network below.
★ Edo-Italy human-trafficking economy (1990s–present) — by the late 1990s Edo accounts for ~94% of Nigerian women trafficked to Europe (IOM 2017); UNESCO estimates 30,000–60,000 Edo women in the European sex trade at peak; the Oba Ewuare II curse on traffickers (9 March 2018) — at the Ugha Erha Oba palace — is the single most consequential anti-trafficking intervention, with documented drops in new departures across 2018–2020.
