Overview#
Ebonyi is the lead-zinc capital of Nigeria — Abakaliki and Ishiagu sit at the centre of the Lower Benue Trough Pb-Zn-Ba-F mineralisation, mined since the 1920s. The state also hosts the largest single salt-producing axis (Uburu-Okposi-Enyigba), and an internationally-traded rice-milling cluster around Abakaliki.
Geology & Deposits#
Lead-zinc-barytes-fluorite (Abakaliki Anticlinorium). Albian-Cenomanian shales, lode and vein-type Pb-Zn deposits at Enyigba, Ameri, Ameka, Mkpuma-Akpatakpa, Ishiagu. The Abakaliki belt has been continuously mined (artisanal + small-scale formal) since 1925; estimated total resources 5+ million tonnes contained Pb-Zn. Salt. Uburu, Okposi, Enyigba salt lakes — brine springs that have been worked by Igbo women for centuries; Okposi salt is the staple of Eastern Nigerian cuisine. Limestone. Nkalagu-Effium (the historic Nigerian Cement Company / Nigercem Nkalagu quarry, founded 1957 as Nigeria's first cement plant; closed 2003). Marble. Ezzamgbo, Ngbo. Rice (resource-by-cultivation). Abakaliki-Ikwo-Ezza South — Nigeria's leading parboiled-rice cluster, "Abakaliki Rice."

Host-Community & Revenue#
The Pb-Zn mining belt has the worst recorded heavy-metal contamination footprint in Nigeria — child blood-lead levels in Enyigba and Ameka were reported by Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF, 2010) at multiples of WHO action thresholds, paralleling the worse-known Zamfara crisis. The state collects mining royalties but has limited remediation capacity.
Current Status#
Producing: Pb-Zn (artisanal + small-scale formal), Abakaliki rice, Uburu-Okposi salt. Dormant: Nigercem Nkalagu. Frontier: any large-scale formal Pb-Zn investor.
