Traditional Rulers — pre-colonial polities (pre-1879)#
Ebonyi groups the Izzi, Ezza, Ikwo, Mgbo, Effium, Afikpo (Ehugbo), Edda, Ohaozara, Uburu, Okposi, Onicha, Ishielu, Ngbo and Ezzamgbo Igbo clans — historically acephalous, organised through age-grades (*ogbo*), *Ozo* title-societies, and the Aro slave-trade network which ran from the Bight of Biafra through Bende and Uburu into the upper Cross River. The Long Juju of Arochukwu (Ibinukpabi shrine) drew supplicants and slaves from across what is today Ebonyi from c. 1690 to 1902. The Uburu salt market (an inland Saharan-style market town) and the Afikpo pottery tradition were already continent-scale before contact. Reigning chairman of the Ebonyi Traditional Rulers Council: HRH Eze Charles Mkpuma (Eze Aleke).
Colonial era (1900–1960)#
Territory entered the Southern Protectorate after the Aro Expedition (Nov 1901 – Mar 1902, Lt-Col. Arthur Festing) — which destroyed the Long Juju at Arochukwu. Ebonyi lands sat in Onitsha Province and Ogoja Province of the Eastern Region. The 1929 Aba Women's War spread into Afikpo and Edda. The 1949 Iva Valley massacre (Enugu coal-miners) drew labour from Ohaozara and Uburu.

East-Central / Anambra / Enugu — parent-state military Governors (1967–1996)#
East-Central State (1967–76, capital Enugu) covered all Igboland east of the Niger. Split in 1976 into Anambra (Enugu capital) and Imo; in 1991 Anambra split into new Anambra + Enugu, and in 1996 Ebonyi was created from Enugu + Abia. • 1967–1971 — Sir Francis Akanu Ibiam (Civilian Administrator, East-Central) — actually an Ebonyi-Afikpo son. • 1970–1975 — Mr. Ukpabi Asika (Administrator, East-Central). • 1975–1976 — Col. Anthony Aboki Ochefu (last Military Governor of East-Central). • 1976–1978 — Col. John Atom Kpera (Anambra). • 1979–1983 — Chief Jim Nwobodo (NPP, civilian Anambra Governor). • 1984–1985 — Brig. Allison Madueke (Anambra). • 1985–1986 — Col. Sampson Omeruah. • 1986–1988 — Col. Robert Akonobi. • 1988–1990 — Col. Joshua Madueke. • 1990–1992 — Col. Herbert Eze. • 1992–1993 — Dr. Chimaroke Nnamani territory remained in Enugu State (created 27 August 1991); Third Republic civilian Governor of Enugu: Okwesilieze Nwodo (NRC).
Ebonyi State military Administrators (1996–1999)#
Ebonyi created 1 October 1996 by Abacha from Enugu + Abia (capital Abakaliki). • 1996–1998 — Navy Capt. Walter Feghabo (founding). • 1998–1999 — Navy Capt. Simeon Oduoye.
Fourth Republic civilian Governors (1999–present)#
- 1999–2007 — Dr. Sam Egwu (PDP) — two terms; later federal Minister of Education.
- 2007–2015 — Chief Martin Elechi (PDP) — two terms; famously fell out with David Umahi over 2015 succession.
- 2015–2023 — Engr. David Umahi (PDP, defected to APC November 2020 — first sitting PDP Governor in the South-East to cross to APC); the "second Niger bridge / industrial cluster" Governor; now Minister of Works under Tinubu.
- 2023–present — Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru (APC).
