Traditional Rulers — pre-colonial polities (pre-1879)#
Delta is the meeting-ground of five major nationalities, each with deep pre-colonial polities: the Itsekiri Kingdom of Warri (founded c. 1480 by Ginuwa I, a Benin prince — *Olu of Warri*, the only Yoruboid/Edo monarchy on the Atlantic), the Urhobo twenty-two kingdoms (Agbon, Okpe, Ughelli, Uvwie, Agbarho, Olomu, Orogun and others, headed by *Ovie*-grade kings, with Orodje of Okpe historically primus inter pares), the Isoko clan-republics (Aviara, Owe, Igbide, Iyede), the Ijaw of Western Delta (Gbaramatu, Egbema, Furupagha, Ogulagha, Iduwini, Mein, Tarakiri, Operemo), the Ukwuani-Aboh kingdom (Aboh on the lower Niger — major 18th-c. slave-port under Obi Ossai), and the Anioma Igbo (Asaba, Onicha-Ado, Issele-Uku, Ubulu-Uku, Aniocha, Ndokwa). The Olu of Warri title goes back to c. 1480; current Olu Atuwatse III (Tsola Emiko) ascended 21 August 2021. The Asagba of Asaba: HRM Prof. Epiphany Azinge.
Colonial era (1900–1960)#
The Western Delta sat in the Niger Coast Protectorate and then Southern Protectorate as Warri Province; the Anioma east of the Niger fell into Asaba Division of Benin Province. The 1879 amalgamation of the United African Company at Aboh and the 1894 Nana Olomu war (deportation of the Itsekiri Governor of the Benin River to the Gold Coast) were the watershed events.
Western Region Premiers (1954–1966)#
The whole of Delta (incl. Anioma) sat inside the Western Region until the 1963 Mid-Western Region referendum (9 August 1963) which created a fourth region. • 1954–1959 — Chief Obafemi Awolowo (AG). • 1959–1966 — Chief Samuel Akintola (AG, later UPP/NNDP); assassinated 15 January 1966.
Mid-Western Region (1963–1966) & Mid-Western State (1967–1976)#
First civilian Premier of the Mid-West: Chief Dennis Osadebay (NCNC), 1964–1966. Renamed Bendel State by Murtala (1976) but Anioma + Itsekiri/Urhobo/Isoko/Ijaw lands remained inside Bendel until 1991.
Bendel State military Governors & civilian (1967–1991)#
Bendel covered today's Delta + Edo combined; see Edo entry for the full military-administrator roster. Civilian Governor: Prof. Ambrose Alli (UPN, 1979–83). Third Republic Bendel civilian Governor: John Odigie-Oyegun (SDP, 1992–93).
Delta State military Administrators (1991–1999)#

Luke Ochulor (founding Military Administrator). • 1992–1993 — Chief Felix Ibru (SDP) — Third Republic civilian Governor. • 1993–1996 — Lt. Col. Ibrahim Kefas / Navy Capt.
