Overview#
Borno's resource story has been frozen by fifteen years of Boko Haram insurgency (2009–). Pre-insurgency, the Chad Basin Inland Hydrocarbon Project (Lake Chad sub-basin) was Nigeria's most-funded frontier exploration; soda-ash extraction from the Lake Chad evaporites was a viable industrial proposition; the Mandara highlands hold cassiterite and feldspar. Almost none of this is currently producing.
Geology & Deposits#
Chad Basin oil & gas. The Bornu Sub-basin (south-east of Lake Chad). NNPC drilled 23 frontier wells between 1976 and 2014 — gas shows at Wadi-1, Mbeji-1, Murshe-1, Tuma-1, Kinasar-1 — but no commercial declaration. The 2017 Barwa-1 re-entry under Ibe Kachikwu encountered insurgency. Soda ash & potash (Lake Chad evaporites). Trona deposits at the lake margins. Cassiterite, feldspar, kaolin. Mandara mountains (Gwoza, Pulka). Limestone, gypsum. Damboa, Biu Plateau. Diatomite. Bama-Dikwa basin — only diatomite deposit of industrial scale in Nigeria.
Operators & Output#
- NNPC Frontier Exploration Services Ltd — sole operator in the Chad Basin; activity suspended 2014, intermittent re-entry attempts since. - Bornu Geological Survey (state) — dormant.
Output: effectively zero across the formal mining and hydrocarbon sectors since 2014. Pre-2009, the Lake Chad evaporites supported a small soda-ash trade out of Baga.
Host-Community & Revenue#
Borno receives no derivation. The state's FAAC and IGR have been buttressed since 2015 by federal North-East Development Commission (NEDC) allocations rather than resource revenues. The Maiduguri Geological Survey field offices were destroyed in 2014–2016.
Current Status#
Dormant: every named field and deposit in the state, courtesy of insurgent control of Sambisa, Gwoza, Mandara axes and northern LGAs. The 2022 Kolmani declaration (Bauchi-Gombe border) is geologically continuous with Bornu Sub-basin source rocks and has revived federal interest in a return to Chad Basin drilling.
