Overview#
Benue is overwhelmingly an agricultural-resource state — the "Food Basket of the Nation" label is statistically defensible (Benue leads national output in yam, soya bean, rice paddy and sesame). On the mineral side it sits on the Lower-Middle Benue Trough Pb-Zn-Ba belt, with the most accessible barytes deposits in the country at Azara (Nasarawa border) and Tor-Donga.
Geology & Deposits#
Limestone (Mfamosing-equivalent at Tse-Kucha, Yandev, Gboko). The Yandev limestone is the captive deposit of Dangote Cement Gboko (formerly Benue Cement Company, est. 1980). Barytes. Lessel, Tor-Donga, Mbayion — the same Lower Benue mineralisation that extends into Azara (Nasarawa). Lead-zinc. Awe-Wukari extensions; small. Coal. Owukpa lignite (Otukpo LGA) — mined briefly in the 1950s for Eastern Region railways. Salt. Awe-Keana brine springs (just over the Nasarawa boundary) — historically central to the Salt Wars of the 19th century Tiv-Jukun frontier. Agricultural resources. Yam (Zaki-Biam is the largest yam market in West Africa), rice (Makurdi-Otukpo axis), soya bean (Nigeria's leading state), sesame, citrus (Yandev), mango.
Operators & Output#
- Dangote Cement (Gboko plant) — limestone, ~4 million tonnes/year cement capacity. - NIMCO Nigeria Ltd — barytes at Lessel. - Smallholders and Tiv traders — Zaki-Biam yam market (estimated annual throughput >500,000 tonnes of yam tubers).
Host-Community & Revenue#
Benue receives no 13% derivation (no oil). Its FAAC share has been continuously eroded by the Tiv-Fulani / herder-farmer crisis since 2011; the Anti-Open Grazing Law 2017 (Sec. Open Grazing Prohibition & Ranches Establishment Law) was an explicit attempt by Governor Samuel Ortom to protect the state's agricultural-resource base.
Current Status#
Producing: Gboko cement, Lessel barytes (artisanal-to-medium), Zaki-Biam yam. Dormant: Owukpa lignite, Awe-Keana salt (industrial). Threatened: the agricultural base — multiple LGAs (Guma, Logo, Agatu) have been intermittently displaced since 2014.
