Benue's pre-colonial Tiv society was famously stateless — segmentary lineages without paramount chiefs. The thrones below are largely 20th-century colonial constructions, except for the Idoma's Och'Idoma and the Igede.

1. Tor Tiv — Tiv paramountcy ★#

Created 1947 by the British as a Tiv paramount stool seated at Gboko. Tor Tiv I was Makir Dzakpe (1947–60); Tor Tiv V was Alfred Akawe Torkula (1991–2015). Reigning: HRM Prof James Ortese Iorzua Ayatse (Tor Tiv V, since 2017). Crown action: No pre-colonial RNC treaty (Tiv resisted treaties); Munshi Patrols 1906–60. Linked events: 1964 Tiv Riots; Zaki Biam massacre (20–24 Oct 2001, c. 200 Tiv civilians killed by Nigerian Army).

Consorts of the Tor Tiv#

*The Tor Tiv is a 20th-century paramountcy — created by the colonial Native Authority ordinance of 1946 to give the segmentary Tiv society a single ceremonial head. The senior wife of the Tor Tiv is titled Iyamhe Tor Tiv; the office has no pre-colonial precedent, and the public record begins only with the installation of the first Tor Tiv in 1947.*

Iyamhe Tor Tiv I (fl. 1947–1960)#

Senior wife of Tor Tiv I, Makir Dzakpe (r. 1947–1960). Hosted the visit of the Western Region Premier Awolowo to Gboko in 1957 — a recorded courtesy by the head of the Tiv household to a southern political leader during the regionalist tensions of the late 1950s.

Mrs Asetiv Akperan Orshi (d. 2001)#

Senior wife of Tor Tiv IV, Dr Akperan Orshi (r. 1991–2001). Founded the Tiv Women's Empowerment Initiative at Gboko (1995).

Mrs Beatrice Alfred Akawe Torkula (d. 2015)#

Senior wife of Tor Tiv IV, Alfred Akawe Torkula (r. 1991–2015 — Akperan Orshi and Akawe Torkula are sometimes conflated in older sources). Survived by five children.

Mrs Annah Iorzua Ayatse (since 2017)#

Senior wife of the present Tor Tiv V, Professor James Ortese Iorzua Ayatse (installed 27 May 2017 after a 23-month succession dispute). 2. Och'Idoma — Idoma paramountcy ★#

Created 1947 at Otukpo. Och'Idoma I was Ogiri Oko (1947–60). Reigning: HRH Agabaidu John Elaigwu Odogbo (Och'Idoma V, since 2021).

3. Adi of Igede — Igede paramountcy#

Seated at Oju.

4. Atta Etulo — Etulo Kingdom#

Small but ancient; tributary of Igala.

5. Ad'Ogbadibo / Ad'Apa / Ad'Akpa — Idoma sub-stools#

Recognised as district stools under the Idoma Area Traditional Council.

6. Och'Agatu / Och'Igumale / Och'Edumoga#

Idoma district kings under the Och'Idoma.
