Overview#
Bayelsa is the smallest state in Nigeria by population and the most oil-dependent — well over 90% of its IGR-and-FAAC envelope is hydrocarbon-derived. The Oloibiri field at Otuabagi (1956) is the founding well of Nigeria's oil industry; the Nembe Creek and Brass terminals process the western Niger Delta's heaviest production. The state is also the centre of Nigeria's worst onshore oil-pollution record (Ogoni, Bodo, Aghoro).
Geology & Deposits#
Niger Delta sedimentary basin — central swamp & shallow offshore. Akata, Agbada and Benin formation sands; reservoirs are stacked Miocene-Pliocene sandstones. Bonny-Light, Brass-Light and Forcados-Light grades.
Key fields. Oloibiri (Otuabagi/Otuogidi, OML 29 — historic, low production today); Nembe; Cawthorne Channel; Soku (gas-condensate, feeds NLNG via Soku-Bonny pipeline); Gbaran-Ubie integrated oil-and-gas project; Idama; Robertkiri.
Terminals. Brass terminal (Eni/Agip); Nembe Creek trunk line (Aiteo); Bonny terminal partly fed from Bayelsa fields.
Gas. Gbaran-Ubie (SPDC), Soku (SPDC) — both NLNG feeder fields.
Operators & Output#
- Aiteo Eastern E&P — OML 29 (Nembe), the divested Shell asset (2014). Operator of the Nembe Creek Trunk Line (NCTL) — site of the 6 Nov 2021 – 22 Mar 2022 Santa Barbara well-1 blow-out (~5 months uncontrolled). - Renaissance Africa Energy Holdings (formerly SPDC Onshore) — Soku, Gbaran-Ubie post-2024 divestment. - Eni / NAOC — Brass. - First E&P — Anyala-Madu (OML 83/85).
Crude output: 350,000–500,000 bpd (state share of Niger Delta production).
Host-Community & Revenue#
Bayelsa is among the top three 13% derivation recipients in absolute naira terms. The Bayelsa State Oil & Environmental Commission chaired by Archbishop Desmond Tutu (2019–2023) documented over 110,000 oil-spill incidents in the state since 1956. Bodo (Ogoni, technically Rivers but cross-Bayelsa pipeline), Aghoro and Nembe communities have outstanding compensation suits against Shell and Aiteo running into hundreds of millions of US dollars.
Current Status#
Producing: Nembe (Aiteo), Soku, Gbaran-Ubie (Renaissance), Brass (Eni), Anyala-Madu (First E&P). Historic/depleted: Oloibiri. Frontier: Bayelsa LNG (state-backed mini-LNG, slow-moving since 2018).
