Hausa is the lingua franca, but Bauchi's hill country shelters one of the densest concentrations of Chadic and Plateau-branch languages on earth.
Major languages#
- Hausa — administrative and market lingua franca across all 20 LGAs.

- Sayawa (Zaar) — ~150,000 speakers around Tafawa Balewa LGA.
- Jarawa — Toro and Bauchi LGAs.
- Bole — Fika/Potiskum axis (shared with Yobe).
Minor and endangered languages#
- Pa'a, Geji, Boto, Polchi, Zaranda, Warji — all small Chadic languages, several with under 5,000 speakers and UNESCO-endangered status.
Lingua francas#
Hausa is universal; Fulfulde in pastoralist circles; English in schools.
Notable literary and political moments#
- The Bauchi Discussion Circle (1943, around Sa'adu Zungur, Aminu Kano and Tafawa Balewa) wrote some of the first political pamphlets in Hausa to circulate outside the Native Authority press.
