Traditional Rulers — pre-colonial polities (pre-1879)#
Founded by Yakubu I (a Gerawa Fulani jihad flag-bearer commissioned by Usman dan Fodio in 1805), the Bauchi Emirate is one of the senior Sokoto Caliphate sub-states; capital at Bauchi town from 1809. Surrounding the emirate are the Gerawa, Sayawa, Jarawa, Warjawa, Pa'awa, Boghom, Kanawa, Zaranda, Dass, Tangale-Waja and Ningi chieftaincies — many of which fought the Sokoto jihad and produced the Ningi revolt (1846–1903) that resisted Caliphate authority for half a century. Reigning since 2010: HRH Dr. Rilwanu Suleiman Adamu, 19th Emir of Bauchi.
Colonial era (1900–1960)#
Administered as Bauchi Province, Northern Protectorate (1903), then Northern Region. The 1902 Crown conquest used the Sokoto–Lugard understanding to absorb Bauchi without battle. The Jos tin-fields (then in Bauchi Province before the 1926 Plateau excision) made the province an early labour-migration zone.
