- 26–29 October 1982 — Bulumkutu/Bauchi Maitatsine uprising — sect followers of Marwa Maitatsine, displaced from Kano, attack police and clerical authority in Bauchi and Maiduguri; 400+ deaths across both cities (federal Sani Sami panel, 1983). Bauchi-specific death toll: ~150.Unprosecuted Massacre Cycle
- April 1991 — Tafawa Balewa Crisis I — dispute over a pork-meat sale in Tafawa Balewa market between a Sayawa (Christian) trader and a Hausa-Fulani (Muslim) customer escalates into mass communal violence across Tafawa Balewa, Bogoro, Bununu and Bauchi town. Estimated 300+ killed, 30+ villages burned. President Babangida sends in the Army; the General A.B. Mamman Judicial Commission (1991) recommends a separate Sayawa chiefdom but the Bauchi Emirate Council resists. The crisis is the founding event of the modern North-East indigene–settler pattern.Impunity Loop
- June 1995 — Tafawa Balewa Crisis II — renewed clashes following the killing of a Sayawa man at a market dispute; ~100 killed. The 1995 Justice Karibi-Whyte Commission finally recommends formal recognition of a Sayawa (Zaar) Chiefdom — implemented partially by Governor Tatari Ali in 1996.
- 1991–1999 — Recurring Bauchi–Gombe corridor violence — low-intensity Sayawa, Jarawa and Boyawa attacks on Fulani pastoralist routes; no full-scale operation but documented in HRW *They Do Not Own This Place* (2006).Climate-Conflict Escalator
