Overview#
Anambra is one of the youngest entrants to Nigeria's oil-producing-state club — declared a producer in 2016 after the Anambra River Basin's Aguleri-Otuocha discovery moved into commercial production. The state also hosts the country's most extensive natural-gas resource outside the Niger Delta (the Anambra Basin in the Lower Cretaceous Asu River formation), as well as long-mined Enugu-Onitsha coal belt extensions.
Geology & Deposits#
Anambra River Basin oil & gas. The basin runs north-west from the Niger Delta proper into Anambra, Enugu, Kogi and Edo. Cretaceous Awgu-Eze Aku source rocks, Nkporo and Mamu formation reservoirs. Estimated 1 billion barrels in place + 3 tcf of gas. Aguleri-Otuocha field (OPL 915 / OML 117). Discovered 2010 by Orient Petroleum Resources, declared commercial 2014, first oil 2016. Coal. Onitsha-area sub-bituminous coal (Mamu formation) — extensions of the Enugu coal field. Limestone, clay, glass-sand. Nzam-Anam clays; Awka kaolin; Ozubulu glass-sand.
Operators & Output#
- Orient Petroleum Resources Ltd — operator of OML 117 (Aguleri-Otuocha). The first wholly indigenous, on-shore E&P operator in eastern Nigeria. - Sterling Global Oil Resources — OPL 905/907 (Anambra Basin). - Sahara Energy / SEEPCO — gas plays.
Current crude output: 2,000–3,500 bpd from Aguleri-Otuocha (2024). The state's first quarterly 13% derivation cheque was received in March 2016.
Host-Community & Revenue#
The Aguleri-Otuocha–Umuleri communities (the producing axis) have a long history of inter-communal disputes that pre-date oil — the 1995 and 1999 Aguleri-Umuleri wars killed several hundred people over Otuocha land. The 2016 onset of production has overlaid an oil-revenue dimension on those land disputes; the Anambra State government created the Anambra Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (ANOPADEC) in 2014 ahead of first oil.
Current Status#
Producing: Aguleri-Otuocha (Orient). Frontier: Anambra Basin gas — NNPC's 2022 Kolmani-style declarations have not yet been replicated south of the Benue, but the geology is comparable.
