Governors & Tenure — Anambra State

Traditional Rulers — pre-colonial polities (pre-1879)#

The territory is Igbo heartland: the Nri Kingdom (priestly state of Eze Nri, c. 9th century onwards — the oldest continuously-attested polity in Igboland), the Aguleri and Umueri clans (Eri-founder traditions), the Onitsha Kingdom (Obi of Onitsha, founded c. 1630 by a Bini royal exile), the Igbo-Ukwu bronze-casting centre (radiocarbon-dated 9th century), the Awka blacksmith confederacy, and the Nnewi, Ihiala, Ogbaru and Anam clan republics. Reigning Obi of Onitsha: HRM Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe (CFR, since 2002).

Colonial era (1900–1960)#

Administered as Onitsha Province, Southern Protectorate (1900–14), then Eastern Region. Onitsha was the gateway market of the Lower Niger and the centre of the Onitsha Market Literature (1947–66). CMS and Catholic mission stations made the area the most-Christianised zone north of the Niger by 1930.

Eastern Region Premiers (1954–1966)#

1954–1959 — Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe (NCNC) — Onitsha-Anam by descent; the Anambra heartland is the political base of Zikism.
1959–1966 — Dr. Michael Okpara (NCNC).

East-Central State (1967–1976)#

1967–1975 — Ukpabi Asika, Administrator (Anambra was occupied and fought over throughout the Biafran War; Onitsha changed hands repeatedly 1967–68).

Anambra State (old) military Governors (1976–1991)#

Anambra was created on 3 February 1976 by Murtala (capital Enugu) covering present-day Anambra + Enugu + parts of Ebonyi. • 1976–1977 — Col. John Atom Kpera, founding Military Governor. • 1977–1978 — Maj. Gen. Godwin Ally. • 1978–1979 — Col. David Jemibewon. • 1979–1983 — Chief Jim Ifeanyichukwu Nwobodo (NPP) — Second Republic civilian Governor. • 1983 — Chief Christian Onoh (NPN), 28-day Governor before the 31 Dec 1983 coup. • 1984–1986 — Brig. Ndubisi Kanu. • 1986–1990 — Col. Sampson Omeruah / Col. Robert Akonobi. • 1990–1992 — Col. Herbert Eze (transition to Enugu excision, 27 Aug 1991).

Third Republic civilian Governor (1992–1993)#

1992–1993 — Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife (SDP) — first Third Republic civilian Governor; sacked when Abacha dissolved democratic structures November 1993.

Anambra State (new) military Administrators (1993–1999)#

1993–1996 — Col. Cosmos Ukuta.
1996–1998 — Col. Mike Attah.
1998–1999 — Air Cdre. Mike Onoja.

Fourth Republic civilian Governors (1999–present)#

1999–2003 — Dr. Chinwoke Mbadinuju (PDP).
2003–2006 — Dr. Chris Ngige (PDP); Supreme Court annulled the election March 2006 for rigging. The Ngige abduction of 10 July 2003 by the Uba/Anyim PDP faction is one of the Fourth Republic's most famous attempted-coup-against-an-elected-governor episodes.Northern Abandonment Cycle Election Crisis Pattern
2006–2014 — Mr. Peter Obi (APGA) — restored by court order March 2006; re-elected 2010; produced the *Obi v INEC* (2007) tenure-clarity ruling.
2014–2022 — Chief Willie Obiano (APGA); re-elected 2017; arrested by EFCC on leaving office March 2022.
2022–present — Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo (APGA) — former CBN Governor (2004–09).
