2003 governorship-kidnap crisis — on 10 July 2003 Governor Chris Ngige is kidnapped by police officers acting for godfather Chris Uba in a publicised dispute over alleged election-funding obligations; Ngige is forcibly resigned on television, then re-installed. 2004–05 Anambra arson — coordinated burning of state government buildings (Government House, INEC offices, Awka High Court) in retaliation for the failed Uba-Ngige operation. Chinua Achebe cites these events in his 2004 letter refusing the CFR (see Achebe's Honours Refusals).
