Overview#
Akwa Ibom is, in most months, Nigeria's single largest crude-oil-producing state — overtaking Rivers in production volume since c. 2005 — anchored on the giant ExxonMobil Qua Iboe terminal at Ibeno. It also hosts deep-water gas, an LNG export project (planned), and the Mfamosing limestone belt that feeds Lafarge UNICEM cement.
Geology & Deposits#
Qua Iboe oil province (offshore + swamp). OMLs 67, 68, 70, 99 — Mobil Producing Nigeria (now ExxonMobil) acreage. Light, low-sulphur Qua Iboe Light crude (API ~36), historically Nigeria's premium export grade alongside Bonny Light. Reserves >5 billion barrels in place; recoverable ~3 billion remaining.
Deep-water blocks. OPL 245 (the Malabu block — partially in Akwa Ibom waters), OML 138 (Usan field, Total/Chevron/Esso/Nexen), and Erha (OML 133, ExxonMobil) lie partly off the Akwa Ibom coast.
Natural gas. Associated gas at Qua Iboe and dry gas at the Oso condensate field (offshore). The Mobil Oso NGL Project (1992–) processes Oso wet gas into NGL exports.
Limestone. The Mfamosing limestone (Eocene) — basis of the Lafarge UNICEM cement plant at Mfamosing, capacity ~5 million tonnes/year.
Coal & lignite. Minor lignitic outcrops at Itu; uneconomic.
Operators & Output#
- ExxonMobil (Mobil Producing Nigeria Unlimited) — Qua Iboe terminal; pre-divestiture production peaked at 750,000 bpd, current production ~250,000–300,000 bpd. In 2022 ExxonMobil agreed to sell its shallow-water assets to Seplat Energy for US$1.28 bn — the deal closed in December 2024 after long ministerial blockade. - Total Energies / Chevron / Esso / Nexen — Usan deep-water (OML 138). - Lafarge Africa (UNICEM Mfamosing) — limestone & cement.
Current state output (2024): ~400,000 bpd of crude, ~600 mmscf/d of gas.
Host-Community & Revenue#
Akwa Ibom is consistently among the top three FAAC recipients by absolute naira amount, courtesy of the 13% derivation. Even so, the Ibeno and Eket host communities have a long history of compensation litigation against ExxonMobil — the 1998 Idoho platform spill and the 2012 Qua Iboe terminal spills are still in court.
Current Status#
Producing: Qua Iboe (Seplat post-2024), Usan, Erha, Oso NGL, Mfamosing cement. Project: Nigeria LNG Train 7 intake includes Akwa Ibom gas; the proposed NLNG Train 8 would deepen this further.
