- Aro slave-raiding into Ibibio land (c.1700–1901) — the Long Juju oracle of Arochukwu underwrote a centuries-long slave-export economy through Calabar; Ibibio villages were the principal raiding ground. Ended only by the Aro Expedition.
- Calabar slave-trade depopulation (c.1650–1841) — the Cross River estuary was one of the four largest African embarkation ports of the Atlantic slave trade.
