1. Lamido of Adamawa (Yola) — Adamawa Emirate ★#
Founded 1809 by Modibbo Adama; capital moved to Yola in 1841. After Lamido Zubeiru's 1901 resistance and death in 1903, the British installed his brother Bobbo Ahmadu. The emirate was Sokoto's largest territorial unit. Reigning: HRH Dr Muhammadu Barkindo Aliyu Mustapha (12th Lamido, since 2010) Era I/III: Sokoto Jihad RNC / Crown treaty: Treaty of 2 Sept 1885 between Lamido Sanda and Sir George Goldie (RNC monopoly over trade in the Adamawa basin); Anglo-German boundary 1893; British conquest of Yola 2 Sept 1901.
Consorts & Royal Wives of the Lamido of Adamawa#
In the Fulbe ruling tradition of Adamawa, the senior wife of the Lamido carries the title Magajiya (lead consort and matron of the harem), with junior wives titled Yaya or by birth-rank. The Magajiya supervises the inner palace, the female slaves and concubines historically attached to the household, and the *Sallah* hospitality. She holds no political portfolio under sharia-inflected emirate rule but is the customary intercessor between the Lamido and women petitioners. Modibbo Adama's senior wife Yaa Asta'u (d. c. 1840s), a learned daughter of a jihad cleric, is the matriarch from whom the Yola ruling line traces its scholarly descent; the wives of Lamido Zubeiru (r. 1890–1901) shared his 1901–03 flight into the Mandara hills after the British took Yola.
HH Hajiya Hadiza Barkindo (Magajiya of Adamawa, since 2010)#
Senior wife of the 12th Lamido HRH Muhammadu Barkindo Aliyu Mustapha. A Yola-born Fulbe of the ruling Bobbo Ahmadu sub-lineage, she runs the Yola palace women's quarters, leads the annual *Durbar* women's procession, and chairs the Lamido's Hospital Aid Committee at Yola. Public profile is deliberately limited in the Adamawa tradition.
2. Tor Bachama (Hama Bachama) of Bachama — Bachama (Bwatiye) Kingdom ★#
Pre-jihad polity at Lamurde on the Benue; resisted Adama's 1820s campaigns. The Bachama and Bata are the indigenous Benue-valley powers the Fulani never fully subdued. Reigning: HRH Daniel Shaga Imuwahidi Honest Stephen (Hama Bachama)
Consorts of the Hama Bachama#
The senior wife of the Hama Bachama carries the title Gboro Hama (Mother of the Throne). In the Bwatiye matrilineal-influenced custom, she co-presides over the *Mbula-Kwa* harvest festival and the Lamurde river rites; unlike the Fulbe Magajiya she sits openly in the council of elders for matters touching women, farmland and inheritance. The current Gboro Hama is the senior wife of HRH Daniel Shaga Imuwahidi Honest Stephen.
3. Kpana Pi of Mbula (Bwatiye sub-throne)#
Closely allied to the Hama Bachama; controlled the Numan crossing. The senior consort holds the title Ma Pi, parallel to the Gboro Hama at Lamurde.
4. Gangwari Ga'anda (Chief of Ga'anda) — Ga'anda#
Mandara-foothills kingdom famous for the *Sapta* scarification rites. The senior wife carries the title Ma Ga'anda and presides over the female-initiation cycle that culminates in the *Sapta*.
5. Tabra of Mubi / Hama of Holma / Chief of Madagali — Northern Cameroons emirates#
Sub-emirates ceded to Nigeria by the 11 Feb 1961 UN Plebiscite. Senior wives in each follow the Fulbe Magajiya title where the throne is Muslim (Mubi, Madagali) and the indigenous matron-title where it is non-Muslim (Holma).
6. Hama Batta / Higi / Margi / Kilba (Huba) chiefs#
Adamawa-language micro-kingdoms in the Mandara hills; flashpoints of the 2014–17 Boko Haram insurgency (Madagali, Michika, Mubi). Consort titles vary by language group — Ma Higi, Ma Margi, Ma Huba — each the senior wife and ritual matron of her throne.
