Traditional Rulers — pre-colonial polities (pre-1879)#
The territory is dominated by the Adamawa Emirate, founded c. 1809 by Modibbo Adama bin Ardo Hassan, a Fulani jihad flag-bearer commissioned by Usman dan Fodio. The emirate was the largest of all Sokoto Caliphate sub-states by area — reaching across modern Cameroon to the Mandara mountains — with its capital at Yola from 1841. Surrounding the emirate are the Bata, Bachama, Margi, Higi, Kilba, Chamba, Mumuye and Verre kingdoms — the "Adamawa minorities" — many of which the Yola jihad never fully conquered. Reigning since 2010: HRH Dr. Muhammadu Barkindo Aliyu Mustapha, 12th Lamido of Adamawa.
Colonial era (1900–1960)#
The Anglo-German partition of 1893 cut the emirate in two, leaving "German Adamawa" in Kamerun and the smaller British remainder as Yola Province, Northern Protectorate (1903). After WWI the former German territory was administered as the Northern Cameroons Trust. The 11 February 1961 UN plebiscite saw Northern Cameroons vote to join Nigeria — the only Nigerian state with a post-independence territorial expansion via plebiscite.

North-Eastern State (1967–1976)#

Gongola State military Governors (1976–1991)#
The territory sat inside Gongola State (created 3 Feb 1976; capital Yola) covering present-day Adamawa + Taraba. • 1976 — Col. Muhammadu Buhari — briefly Military Governor in the transition before becoming Federal Petroleum Commissioner. • 1976–1978 — Col. Mohammed Jega. • 1978–1979 — Group Capt. Salihu Ibrahim. • 1979–1983 — Alhaji Abubakar Barde (GNPP) — Second Republic civilian Governor; lost re-election to NPN. • 1983 — Alhaji Bamanga Tukur (NPN) — completed brief 1983 term; later AfDB president. • 1984–1985 — Group Capt. Jonah David Jang (Buhari-era). • 1985–1988 — Capt. Yohanna Madaki. • 1988–1990 — Col. Mohammed Magoro. • 1990–1991 — Col. Yohanna Awak Kure (transition to Adamawa excision).
Adamawa State military Administrators (1991–1999)#
Adamawa was created on 27 August 1991 by Babangida (Decree 37 of 1991), excised from Gongola alongside Taraba. • 1991–1992 — Col. Bala Mande, founding Military Administrator. • 1992–1993 — Air Cdre. Anthony Ukpo. • 1993–1996 — Brig. Gen. Kabiru Musa. • 1996–1998 — Col. Bello Sarkin Yaki. • 1998–1999 — Col. Ahmad Muhammad Usman.
Fourth Republic civilian Governors (1999–present)#
- 1999–2007 — Boni Haruna (PDP).
- 2007–2014 — Adm. Murtala Nyako (rtd; PDP) — first naval admiral elected Governor; impeached 15 July 2014 over ₦15.4 bn alleged diversion.
- 2014–2015 — Bala James Ngilari (PDP) — Deputy who completed Nyako's term.
- 2015–2019 — Muhammadu Umaru Jibrilla Bindow (APC).
- 2019–present — Rt. Hon. Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri (PDP); re-elected 2023 after a contested INEC declaration involving APC's Aishatu "Binani" Dahiru.
