Traditional Rulers — pre-colonial polities (pre-1879)#
The polities now inside Abia were not unified kingdoms but a federation of autonomous Igbo village-groups: the Ngwa clans (Aba, Obingwa, Osisioma, Ugwunagbo, Ukwa), the Ohuhu–Umuahia cluster, the Item confederacy, the Ohafia and Abriba warrior states, and the Aro Confederacy centred on Arochukwu (whose Long Juju oracle was the regulatory court of southeastern Nigeria from the 17th century until the 1901–02 Aro Expedition). Authority was held by *ofo*-holding elders and age-grade councils, not by reigning monarchs. Most contemporary Eze titles (Eze Aro of Arochukwu, Enachioken of Abiriba) were codified by the British under the 1900 Native Court system and the 1933 post–Aba Women's War reforms.
Colonial era (1900–1960)#
Administered as part of Owerri Province, Southern Protectorate (1900–14), then Eastern Region (1939–60). The 1901–02 Aro Expedition broke the Arochukwu oracle. The 1929 Aba Women's War (Ogu Umunwanyi) — fought in present-day Aba, Bende and Owerrinta — forced the Crown to scrap the Warrant Chief system. District Officers sat at Aba, Umuahia, Bende and Ohafia.
Eastern Region Premiers (1954–1966)#
- 1954–1959 — Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe (NCNC); Aba and Umuahia were core NCNC strongholds.
- 1959–1966 — Dr. Michael Okpara (NCNC); deposed by the 15 Jan 1966 coup.
East-Central State (1967–1976)#
- 1967–1975 — Ukpabi Asika, Administrator (Gowon's wartime Igbo appointee). Umuahia was Biafra's second capital, September 1967 – April 1969, after Enugu fell.
Imo State military Governors (1976–1991)#
Abia did not yet exist; its present LGAs sat inside Imo State (created 3 Feb 1976 under Murtala's 12-to-19-state reform). • 1976 — Cdre. Godwin Ndubuisi Kanu, founding Military Governor of Imo. • 1976–1978 — Col. Adekunle Lawal. • 1978–1979 — Cdre. Sunday Adekunle Adenihun. • 1979–1983 — Chief Sam Onunaka Mbakwe (NPP) — Second Republic civilian Governor; the "Weeping Governor" who built Imo Airport from community contributions. • 1984 — Brig. Ike Nwachukwu (Buhari-era). • 1985–1988 — Navy Capt. Allison Amaechina Madueke. • 1988–1990 — Col. Amadi Ikwechegh. • 1990–1991 — Col. Anthony Oguguo (transition to Abia excision).
Abia State military Administrators (1991–1999)#
Abia was created on 27 August 1991 by Babangida (Decree 37 of 1991), excised from Imo. • 1991–1993 — Brig. Olusegun Abodunde, founding Military Administrator. • 1993–1996 — Brig. Bello Sarkin Yaki. • 1996–1998 — Brig. Gen. Abubakar Umar. • 1998–1999 — Lt. Col. Austin Onuoha.
Fourth Republic civilian Governors (1999–present)#
- 1999–2007 — Chief Orji Uzor Kalu (PDP) — first civilian Governor; later defected to PPA, prosecuted by EFCC over ₦7.65 bn alleged diversion.
- 2007–2015 — Chief Theodore Ahamefule "T.A." Orji (PDP) — formerly Kalu's Chief of Staff.
- 2015–2023 — Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu (PDP) — Ngwa-zone Governor; pharmaceutical-industries push.
- 2023–present — Dr. Alex Otti (Labour Party) — first non-PDP Governor of Abia, elected on the Peter Obi wave.
