Sunday Adewusi served as IGP for the bulk of the Shagari administration. His tenure was associated with the heavy-handed 'Operation Sweep' anti-crime campaign and with the contested 1983 general election that triggered the Buhari/Idiagbon coup of 31 December 1983.

He was removed from office immediately after the coup.
