The record
Alhaji Ibrahim Coomassie served as IGP for nearly six years — the longest single tenure of any Nigerian IGP. His time in office covered the entire Sani Abacha regime, the death of Abacha (8 June 1998), the Abdulsalami Abubakar transition, and the inauguration of the Fourth Republic on 29 May 1999.
His tenure included the detention of M.K.O. Abiola, the killings of pro-democracy activists, and the policing of the 1998–99 transition elections.
