The record
Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Sardauna of Bauchi (1912–1966), led Nigeria to independence as Prime Minister on 1 October 1960. A founding member of the Northern People's Congress, he served as Federal Minister of Works (1952) and Minister of Transport (1954–57) before becoming Prime Minister of the Federation in 1957 and of independent Nigeria from October 1960 until his assassination on 15 January 1966 in the first military coup.
He was already a GCMG (1960) when independence came. The posthumous GCFR conferred on 22 May 2022 — the silver jubilee of Democracy Day — repaired a 56-year omission that no civilian or military government had addressed.
