Queen Idia of Benin

Summary

Mother of Oba Esigie of Benin (r. c.1504–1550). She raised an army that decisively defeated the Igala invasion led by Attah Ayegba, securing Benin from northern conquest. In recognition Esigie created the title Iyoba (Queen Mother) — a permanent senior office of the Benin court — and built her a palace at Uselu. The Benin ivory mask carved in her likeness was looted by the 1897 British Punitive Expedition; one of the five surviving copies became the emblem of FESTAC 1977.
