The greatest of the Niger Delta merchant princes — a former Igbo slave who became Africa's richest palm-oil king. Overlaid by: Edward Hyde Hewett (Treaty of Protection 1884) → Acting Consul Harry Johnston, who deported him in 1887 in defiance of the protection treaty's trade clauses. Monetary context: Opobo was founded in 1869 precisely to escape the cowrie- and manilla-rigged Bonny market and trade palm-oil directly for sterling with Liverpool firms — the one currency the British were not actively crashing. Born Mbanaso Okwaraozurumba in Amaigbo (today's Imo State) c. 1821, sold into slavery at Bonny aged 12, he rose to head of the Anna Pepple House. After the 1869 Bonny succession war he led his followers eastward and founded Opobo town, monopolising the Imo and Qua Iboe palm-oil rivers. By 1885 he was selling oil directly to Liverpool, cutting out the British supercargoes.
Hewett signed a Treaty of Protection with Jaja on 1 July 1884 that explicitly preserved his trade monopoly. When Hewett retired in 1891 the Foreign Office sent Acting Consul Harry Johnston, who in 1887 invited Jaja aboard HMS Goshawk under flag of truce, arrested him, and deported him without trial. The deportation was so notorious that even the 1888 House of Commons inquiry condemned it; Jaja was ordered repatriated but died at sea off the Canary Islands in 1891.
The Amanyanabo stool of Opobo continues; the current king is HRM King Dandeson Douglas Jaja, Jaja III (since 1980).
