- Aro Field Force destroys the Ibini Ukpabi ('Long Juju') oracle, 28 December 1901; confederacy administrative network broken by 1902
The hegemonic non-state network of Igboland — the Aro ran the inland slave trade and a continent-spanning oracular court through the Ibini Ukpabi shrine. Overlaid by: Sir Ralph Moor (Aro Expedition, December 1901 – February 1902). Monetary context: Arochukwu was also the largest interior cowrie-credit clearinghouse in the Bight of Biafra. The British crash of cowrie purchasing power (over 80% between 1851 and 1869) left the Aro factor-houses structurally bankrupt before Festing's 1,500-man force arrived. See [How the currency fell before the flag](/stories/how-the-currency-fell-before-the-flag).
The Aro Confederacy combined religious authority (the Ibini Ukpabi oracle at Arochukwu, the supreme court of the Igbo and Ibibio world) with commercial authority (the Aro trading diaspora that ran the slave trade from the interior to the Bight of Biafra ports) and military authority (mercenary alliances with Ohafia, Abam and Edda warriors). It was the single most powerful institution in pre-colonial south-eastern Nigeria.
Moor's Aro Field Force (87 officers, 1,500 troops, four columns) destroyed the Long Juju on 28 December 1901. The Eze Aro stool was preserved; the current Eze Aro is HRM Mazi Eberechi Dick Oji (since 2018).
