Lady Gladys Cameron was the wife of Sir Donald Charles Cameron, Governor of Nigeria 1931–35, who arrived in Lagos from Tanganyika to reorganise indirect rule after the Aba Women's War forced the colonial state to abandon female taxation in the South-East. She accompanied her husband on his celebrated provincial tours through Onitsha, Calabar and Kaduna in 1932 — the first comprehensive ground inspection by a Governor since amalgamation.
Her quasi-First-Lady role centred on the Lagos Red Cross, the Queen's College Old Girls' Association (founded under her patronage), and the post-Depression retrenchment relief funds for African civil servants — the first cohort fired when imperial revenues collapsed.
