Deep dive

Savannah Energy is the most consequential Nigerian gas-midstream company outside the NLNG/NNPC complex. Its 2017–2019 acquisition of the former Seven Energy assets — completed over almost two years of creditor negotiations after Seven's 2016 collapse — gave it control of the Accugas pipeline system, which supplies natural gas from the Uquo field (Akwa Ibom) to the Calabar NIPP power plant, the Ibom Power plant, the Notore fertiliser plant and the Unicem cement works.

In aggregate, Accugas supplies the gas for approximately a tenth of Nigerian grid-connected thermal generation. That makes Savannah, a London-listed independent capitalised at a fraction of the IOC majors, one of the most systemically important non-NNPC gas suppliers in the country.

The Nigerian assets remain the cash anchor of the group. Savannah's 2023–24 acquisition of ExxonMobil's legacy Chadian and Cameroonian upstream and pipeline assets extended its African footprint, but the Nigerian gas-to-power business — and the constitutional dependency of the South-East grid on a single private operator — is the company's defining strategic position.
