Deep dive
Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing — the trading name of Innoson Group's automotive arm — was incorporated in 2007 at Nnewi, Anambra State, and commissioned its assembly plant in 2010. It is the first wholly indigenous Nigerian motor vehicle manufacturing operation. Chief Innocent Chukwuma's progression from spare-parts trader (early 1980s) to motorcycle assembler (Innoson Motorcycle Industry, 1981) to integrated motor-vehicle manufacturer (IVM, 2007) is the most complete vertical-integration arc in indigenous Nigerian manufacturing.
IVM's product range includes saloons (IVM G6, G80), SUVs (IVM Fox, IVM Granite), pickups, buses and military variants. The 2018 contract for IVM patrol vehicles for the Nigerian Army and Police was the first significant federal-government procurement of a wholly Nigerian-manufactured vehicle. The company's protracted commercial dispute with GTBank (litigated through the Supreme Court) became a public test of indigenous-industrial protection and the conduct of Nigerian commercial banking toward local manufacturers.
