Deep dive

GTBank — now GTCO — is the most successful Nigerian banking brand of the Fourth Republic, and the only Nigerian company to have listed on the LSE main market via GDRs (26 July 2007) before MTN's domestic IPO. The 2007 GDR issuance, structured by JPMorgan and Renaissance Capital, raised $750m and gave the bank an international shareholder base that has shaped its governance ever since.

The bank's distinctive brand identity — the 'Orange' livery, the early adoption of internet and mobile banking (GTConnect 2002, then *737#), the consistent design discipline across branches — established a retail-banking aesthetic that the rest of the Nigerian sector spent the next decade trying to imitate. Operationally the bank has had the lowest cost-to-income ratio in the Nigerian banking sector for most of the post-2005 period.

The 2011 death of co-founder Tayo Aderinokun, and the elevation of Segun Agbaje (then 47) to GMD, was the central succession event in Nigerian banking that decade. Agbaje's continuous tenure since 2011 is the longest of any current Nigerian bank CEO. The 2021 holding-company restructure (GTCO Plc) added pension, asset-management and payments subsidiaries to position the group against the universal-banking model that Zenith and Access had adopted earlier.
