Deep dive
Arik Air, founded in 2002 by Sir Joseph Arumemi-Ikhide and commencing operations in October 2006, was at its 2010s peak the largest airline in West Africa by fleet, route network and passengers carried. The February 2017 AMCON receivership — triggered by approximately N300bn of accumulated debt — converted what had been the leading private West African airline into a federally administered legacy carrier. Arik's collapse is the founding event of the second wave of Nigerian aviation consolidation that left Air Peace, Ibom Air and Dana as the surviving scheduled operators.
