Founded at Yola (Adamawa) by former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar in partnership with American University, Washington DC. The first American-curriculum, liberal-arts university in sub-Saharan Africa, operated on the US credit-hour and GPA system. AUN's library is the largest electronic library in Sub-Saharan Africa and has served as a regional research hub during the Boko Haram insurgency (its Adamawa Peace Initiative is studied internationally).

The American University of Nigeria (AUN), Yola, was founded in 2004 by Atiku Abubakar (then Vice-President of Nigeria) in partnership with American academic institutions. It was the first 'development university' founded in Nigeria on the US liberal-arts model and is institutionally tied to the Atiku political and industrial portfolio.
