The record
Adamu Ciroma (1934–2018), Fulani aristocrat from Potiskum, Yobe State, was pioneer Managing Director of the New Nigerian newspaper (1967–1975) and Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria from 1975 to 1977 under the Murtala/Obasanjo regime.
He served as Minister of Finance under Shehu Shagari from 1979 to 1981 — Nigeria's first elected Finance Minister of the Second Republic — and again under Olusegun Obasanjo from 1999 to 2003 at the start of the Fourth Republic.
A founding member of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), he was a leading figure in the northern political bloc that brokered the PDP's zoning arrangements. He died on 4 July 2018 in Abuja.
