The record

Dora Nkem Akunyili (1954–2014) became Director-General of NAFDAC on 12 April 2001 and transformed the agency into one of the most credible federal regulators of the Fourth Republic.

She survived an assassination attempt in December 2003 in which gunmen riddled her car with bullets in Anambra State. Counterfeit-drug seizures multiplied 50-fold over her tenure.

She later served as Minister of Information & Communications (2008–2010). She died in India of cancer on 7 June 2014.
